making a book look old? how do i make a wrinkled cover?

i bind hardback books with all vegan materials, and am trying to get synthetic leather (cotton lined textured pvc) to make a wrinkled effect on the cover.
but despite the covering being thin enough to work with normally the plastic just springs back instead of staying wrinkled as the glue (binders pva) dries slowly. ive even tried making wrinkles out of duct tape underneath but the fabric keeps smoothing itself out. any ideas? i tried ironing in creases but ended up with melted plastic!
i dont need to know about the paper (i use vegetable parchment which has a l;ovely old organic feel) it getting the cover to look wrinkled like this
