can somebody explain the most basic set up to grow hydroponic plants?

Several culture techniques are used. The most practical commercial method is subirrigation, in which plants are grown in trays filled with gravel, cinders, or other coarse materials, and periodically flooded with nutrient solution. The solution is allowed to drain off after each flooding and may be reused as long as sufficient minerals remain in it. The water-culture method is used widely for botanical experimentation. A common type of water culture consists of glazed porcelain jars filled with solution; the plants are placed in beds of glass wool or similar material that are supported at the surface of the solution. Roots of the plants penetrate the beds and remain in the solution. The least exact method, commonly called the slop method, is the easiest to operate. Coarse, clean sand is used in place of soil, and nutrient solution is poured on the sand in approximately equal amounts at regular intervals. A refinement of this practice is the drip method, in which a steady, slow feed of nutrient is maintained. Excess nutrient solution is allowed to drain off in both slop and drip methods.

The water culture method of hydroponics is the simplest to set up on a small scale. In this system the plant roots are totally immersed in a nutrient solution. The major disadvantages of this system are the large amount of water required per plant and the need to aerate the solution continuously.

The actual design of the system is limited only by the imagination of the builder. The system must provide means to (1) support the plant above the solution, (2) aerate the solution, and (3) prevent light from reaching the solution (to prevent the growth of algae).

A standard tray or tank is may be made of concrete or of plastic-lined or asphalt-sealed wood. If you use asphalt to seal the tank, be sure that it does not contain creosote or tars. Do not use asphalt that leaves an oil film on the surface of the water. A typical size is 6 to 12 inches deep, 2 to 3 feet wide, and as long as is convenient. The plants can be supported by inserting them through holes drilled in a plywood top or through holes punched in a l-inch-thick Styrofoam sheet that floats on the surface of the solution.

You can make a small system from a child’s wading pool, a plastic pail, a fish tank, or a drinking tumbler. A large tomato plant should be grown in a container that holds at least 2 gallons as the solution in a smaller container will be used up too quickly. Lettuce plants, on the other hand, may be grown in smaller containers.

Aerate the solution continuously by pumping air through a perforated hose or pipe immersed in the solution. For small systems an aquarium pump and porous stone will work. Do not bubble the solution too vigorously because excessive movement may damage the tender roots and impair plant growth.

Change the nutrient solution every two weeks when the plants are small and once a week as they begin to mature. Add water daily to keep the solution level constant.

What supplies would I need for a Multi Flow hydroponics system for in doors?

My Greenhouse class has a project to built our own hydroponics gardening system. The teacher is going to need a list on what to purchase so we can make our systems. My system is a Multi Flow system that grows four pots of plants. I plan it to be around 2 – 2.5 feet long so it doesn’t take much space.

This can be a complicated system because of the timer, switches, valves, wiring, etc…

There are much simpler systems to build like NFT and ebb and flow. But you asked for it…

1 reservoir with lid (55 gallon plastic barrel or less, whatever is reasonable for your system)
4 bases (5 gallon buckets)
4 inserts (largest size that will fit inside 5 gallon buckets)
5 water-tight fittings 1/2″ (drill holes through base buckets and controller and install fittings to buckets)
2 or more 1/2″ tees depending on your system layout.
20′ or so 1/2″ tubing
1 controller bucket with lid (5 gallon like bases)
1 120V timer with relay switch (A to B to A… not on and off)
1 sump pump with float switch -1/2″ outlet (for the controller to drain system)
1 float valve (for controller to turn pump inside reservoir off when level is reached)
1 aquarium pump (placed in reservoir to fill system)
your choice of growing media

Sorry if I have forgotten anything. It is best if you draw up your system and check the list. Also, I’m sorry if I forgot anything, it is a complicated system. You would get similar results with the ebb and flow system but it is much simpler. One of the other answers was for an ebb and flow system not a multi-flow. Good luck and I hope the teacher has a big budget for your system.
