DIY PVC CFL Hydroponic System

The AeroGarden Featured On The Today Show

What are the pros and cons of hydroponics and the pros and cons of growing plants in soil?
ADVANTAGES OF HYDROPONICS
Some of the reasons why hydroponics is being adapted around the world for food production are the following:
* No soil is needed
* The water stays in the system and can be reused- thus, lower water costs
* It is possible to control the nutrition levels in their entirety- thus, lower nutrition costs
* No nutrition pollution is released into the environment because of the controlled system
* Stable and high yields
* Pests and diseases are easier to get rid of than in soil because of the container’s mobility
DISADVANTAGES OF HYDROPONICS
The hydroponic conditions (presence of fertilizer and high humidity) create an environment that stimulates salmonella growth. Another disadvantage is pathogens attacks including damp-off due to Verticillium wilt caused by the high moisture levels associated with hydroponics and overwatering of soil based plants. Also, many hydroponic plants require different fertilizers and containment systems

What’s a science fair project that I can do on hydroponics?
I’m in the eight grade and it’s science fair season. I hate science fair projects with a PASSION. But I’m kinda a nerd sooo YAH. I was just wondering what I can do. I’ve had hydroponics on my mind but what would I be observing? Anyway, i need help. I’m desperate. I HAVE to ace this because I just don’t have the guts to fail. I’ve never failed. Well I failed Drama 1. How embarrassing! Well, help please?
-Cool Nerd
Get a fish aquarium and some goldfish since they are the messiest fish and some kind of planter tray that has a channel for irrigation water to flow. I would plant something simple like green onions aka scallions since they grow rather quickly.
Plant them in the planter. Now you would need a pump to pump the water up to the onions. Using the same type of aquarium hose to run through the planter, you want to make some holes so the water can get to the onions and still flow back into the tank.
This is just a general idea from one Nerd to another. I’m sure you can modify the idea some.
Good Luck Young Jedi!!!

Hey, just thought I’d document my progress here in hopes of learning something. My best seeds so far are cherry radishes, my two types of lettuce, my carrots, and my sunflower seeds. The ones that are kind of iffy but okay for the moment are my evergreen onions, basil, jalapeƱo peppers, and broccoli. I’m not sure at all when it comes to my two garden beans and lavender seeds. I’ll see what happens. Oh, anyone have any tips?
